Family: I am blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart, John, for 37 years; our family of two beautiful daughters, now includes a pair of wonderful sons-in-law and three delightful grandchildren.

History/overview of Enerquip: Enerquip is a privately held company specializing in a wide variety of shell and tube heat exchangers. The company has flourished in recent years under the ownership of the Nielson family of Cody, WY. We’ve grown to be one of the leading providers of heating and cooling equipment for production plants and the OEM’s and system integrators that support them. Our customer base crosses many industries, including dairy, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and industrial.

Management and team members have been afforded the freedom and resources necessary to manage and grow the company. Enerquip has enjoyed significant growth, increasing revenue by more than 50% between 2011 and 2014.

In September, the company began work on a $4 million renovation project to add manufacturing and office space. Phase I of the renovation is complete and staff is enjoying the comforts of an expanded and remodeled office area. Phase II is underway with completion scheduled for July of this year. This phase includes updates to the electrical service, loading dock, and the addition of a 56’ vertical storage tower.

Enerquip’s goal is to be the expert for our customers by providing custom heating and cooling solutions. We work with them to understand their needs, gain their confidence and lead them to the right equipment for their applications. We aren’t just in business to sell equipment rather we want to solve our customers problems, while building long-term relationships that are based on mutual trust and respect. At Enerquip we believe that integrity and accountability are the cornerstones of the relationships we build.

One piece of leadership advice you would offer others: For me, I have found developing solid soft skills has empowered me both personally as well as professionally. The basics such as effective communication, organization, follow through, tenacity and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the people you are dealing with are skills that will help you be successful in any role or circumstance.

One person cannot possibly have all the talents and answers in every given situation. However, being able to assess a situation, understand the people and resources available, and effectively utilize those strengths increases one’s effectiveness. Communication is king! Identifying the key players in a situation is vital. Once you assemble the key players, how well you listen, gather facts, ask questions and read the non-verbal aspects of communication, such as tone of voice and body language, will significantly impact your level of success.

Interest outside of work: I love spending time with family! I enjoy fishing, bird watching, rollerblading, reading, watching movies & hosting home parties where we play cards, games and enjoy good food.

How did you learn about TEC: I had the pleasure of working for Pep Simek, one of the founders of Tombstone Pizza Corporation and former owner of Enerquip LLC. Over the years I had the good fortune to attend numerous TEC presentations as a guest of Pep. Years later Pep’s former TEC group continued to invite me and extended an open invitation to join the group. Like we often do, I felt my plate was full and I hesitated to take on another commitment. Yet every time I attended a session, I left excited by the information presented and the great interaction among the members. Soon I realized what I gained far outweighed what it cost me in time to attend the sessions.

What has TEC done for you personally and/or professionally: Being a member of TEC has provided me with a close knit group of peers with diverse leadership styles and strengths. It is of great value to have this wealth of experience and knowledge available as a resource. Each month I benefit from the quality presentations of top-rated business and motivational speakers, whose presentations challenge and inspire me to keep growing and raising the bar professionally as well as personally.

Lastly, I am thankful for the mentoring and support of our TEC Chair, Fritz Jacobi, through monthly one-on-one sessions. Fritz helps to bring out the best by encouraging us to set goals, be committed, and follow through. We are encouraged to find one new take away from each session and implement a strategy to make it happen.
